Tallahassee : Florida

What Tallahassee is like for active adults
The City of Tallahassee is located in the Big Bend area of northern Florida and a popular retirement community for many active adults 55+. The state capitol; it is a fast growing city (population 171,000) with several charming neighborhoods. Unlike almost anywhere else in Florida, there are gently rolling hills. There are some canopy roads that bring back visions of the old south – live oaks on the side of the road have canopies that meet overhead, and spanish moss drapes down from their elegant branches. Because the city contains the capitol and two universities (Florida State University and Florida A & M), the community is very diverse with something always going on. The city’s history goes back to its first western visitor, Hernando de Soto, who dropped by in 1538. Other distinguished residents have included Red Barber, Faye Dunaway, and Jim Morrison.

Tallahassee has every type of retirement community option – from living in the heart of the city to all types of planned communities further out from town. Fort Myers Park is a very nice residential area - the 1st and 3rd pictures above are from there. Indian Springs is a less pricey but solid neighborhood that is also close to downtown. There are a number of active adult communities to the north and east, whereas the Gulf of Mexico is not that far to the west.

Real estate prices in the area tend to be lower than in coastal communities. You do not see For Sale signs in the quantity that you see in other Florida towns. According to NAR, the average home sales price was $145,900 in the 3rd quarter of 2009, off  vs. previous year.
