What It Is Like to Retire in Abacoa
Abacoa is a new urban planned community in Jupiter. Although it has residents of all ages (including many college students), it definitely appeals to boomers for retirement living. The design philosophy was to have smaller neighborhoods, stronger feeling of community, sense of place, and respect for the environment. It is “a new urbanist community”. Main Street is the center of the community. That is where the festivals, shops, movies, restaurants, galleries, outdoor concerts, and ballgames take place. It is a dynamic and vibrant host to the community's events and celebrations. Abacoa offers multiple activities for active seniors, starting with a university campus – the John D. MacArthur campus of Florida Atlantic University. The Theater Green, the focal point to Abacoa Town Center, and Abacoa Town Center stage host scheduled and impromptu performances as well as a variety of town events. Roger Dean Stadium, which is home to spring training for 2 teams, the Marlins and the Cardinals, is another big draw. On a recent visit by your Topretirements editor there was a group of women playing mahjong in front of the Cuban restaurant, while other boomer aged people finished up a late lunch or had an early drink in one of the many bars and restaurants downtown. Abacoa's master plan has a proper place for every type of function. There are neighborhoods, two college campuses, three public schools, the spring training stadium, a golf course, a Main Street-style Town Center, community commercial centers and a business campus. Greenways and tracts of multifunctional open spaces for conservation purposes are interspersed. Tree-lined streets, with sidewalks on both sides, are another feature worth noting.

Residents enjoy a range of different housing styles and neighborhoods from small apartments to costing well over $1 million. Zillow reported the Home Value Index in the Jupiter/ Abacoa area was $660,886 in mid-2023.

Proximity to stimulating atmosphere of 2 college campuses, master planned community with vibrant town center, Main Street, town squares, sidewalks and greenways, and golf courses, all help to make Abacoa special. Roger Dean Stadium (where 2 teams have their spring training), is located here, along with the Theatre Green and Town Center Stage, and 2 College campuses. Every 2nd Friday there is a Food Truck invasion that brings out lots of people for picnicking downtown. Many planned events every day.

Abacoa is near the town of Jupiter on Florida’s east coast, conveniently located between the Florida Turnpike and I 95. The average January temp is in the mid 60s, and the average July temperature is in the low 80s. Summers are wet and have the possibility of a hurricane.
Restaurants & Cultural Scene
It seems like there is no end to the events going on in Abacoa. Most of these take place at the Theatre Green and Town Center Stage. For example there is creative writers group, fitness groups and yoga, and much more. There are also 2 college campuses at Abacoa. The Daily Event Calendar is full of interesting things to do. The 2nd Friday of every month brings in a bevy of the best food trucks for picnicing downtown. Meanwhile the downtown area is loaded with restaurants and bars of all types.

Crime rate is slightly more than half the national rate in Jupiter, and probably less within Abacoa.
Medical facilities
Nearby Jupiter and Palm Beach have extensive medical facilities.
Transportation
There is a public trolley that operates on the weekends.
