Elkin is a small town of less than 5,000 people in northwestern North Carolina. It offers a lovely historic downtown district,a river view, wine Festival. Elkin is a small town with fantastic cost of living benefits,as well as extensive health care facilities. Average home prices in 2009 are below $80,000. Elkin is about 45 miles from Winston-Salem, the nearest city.

Elkin has been compared to Mayberry (of the Andy Griffith TV show). It is a friendly, but small town. Elkin has the largest WalMart in the state of North Carolina.

Elkin's detractors say that the town is in the sticks. It is not a place for people looking for a lot to do. Other critics say that the locals are friendly to themselves but slow to welcome outsiders.

Elkin's economic history included a large woolen mill, cotton mill, and railroad center. Now a large regional bank and the regional headquarters for a library system are the chief employers.

Elkin is tucked in the northwest corner of North Carolina. Settlers were originally attracted here because of the confluence of Big Elkin Creek and Yadkin River

The Reeves Theater restoration project will provide a performing arts center and cinema. The Tribune is a local newspaper published 3 times a week. At one time Elkin was a large "cruising" center but police put a stop to that.

Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital is in Elkin. Additional hospitals are in other towns within 20 miles
