What it's Like to Retire in Duncanville

Duncanville offers an array of activities for active adults from arts to entertainment to recreation. The D.L. Hopkins Senior Center hosts an annual variety show each year where participants from the Senior Center act, dance and sing entertaining the whole community. Also, Duncanville boasts a community theatre, which hosts six shows a year. There are opportunities for active seniors to play tennis, enjoy the beautiful walking trails, the library and recreation center, dancing and musical lessons, and great local restaurants.

The Texas Historical Commission designated the City of Duncanville as an official Main Street City. When the Duncanville Air Force Base closed it was turned over to the city, which is now where the Duncanville Historical Park is located. Duncanville is  a suburb of Dallas, southwest of the city near Joe Pool Lake.

Duncanville has many quality, affordable housing options from homes to active senior apartments such as Champions Cove, the Duncanville Independent Living Center, Duncanville Health and Rehabilitation Center, and the Laurenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation (see Active Communities link at right).
Average home price according to Zillow was $159,256 in early 2016.

The Texas Department of Agriculture recognized Duncanville as a "Certified Retirement Community." Duncanville, one of few North Texas cities to receive such a designation, is the perfect retirement destination. Here, you will find clean, safe neighborhoods; affordable housing; outstanding medical facilities, an active Senior community, excellent opportunities for shopping and relaxation, and more!

Duncanville is hot during the summer months; is not considered a walkable community.


Who will like retirement in Duncanville

Many kinds of people are attracted to Duncanville because it is an "inclusive community." The City has only about 38,000 residents so it appeals to those that like a country, small town atmosphere with the amenitites of big cities such as an indoor, heated swimming facility, over 1,000 businesses to shop at, access to Joe Pool  Lake and close proximity to Dallas and Fort Worth attractions.


Local economy is driven by

Retirement and tourism from Joe Pool Lake are big contributors to the local economy as well as large attractions such as Costco, the DrPepper Stars Center, local Farmers Market (similar to Whole Foods), Hilton Garden Inn and Pappadeux's.

Climate and Physical Environment

Duncanville is a beautiful city full of beautifully landscaped parks, streets and businesses. Duncanville is known for its flowers and seasonal decorations that dot the main intersections and throughfares from Fall Harvest to Lighted Christmas trees to Fourth of July flags. At the heart of Duncanville is Armstrong Park which is home to the the butterfly, perenial and Earth Kind Rose Gardens.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The D.L. Hopkins Senior Center hosts an annual variety show each year.  Duncanville boasts a community theatre, which hosts six shows a year (www.dctheatre.org). The Duncanville Chamber of Commerce hosts "A Taste of Duncanville" each year in March. The event has a "Senior Hour," which allows those over the age of 55 to visit the event before the crowds arrive.


Crime is just below average.


Medical facilities

Located just outside the Duncanville city limits is Methodist Charlton Medical Center. Seven miles away is Renaissance Hospital and Methodist Dallas Medical Center that has approximately 300 physicians in 60 medical specialties. Duncanville is home to many private dentistry and medical practicies and has an allergy and asthma center.



Duncanville does not have public transportation.
