What it's Like to Retire in Harlingen

 Harlingen is a  growing town of 65,000 near the southern tip of Texas near San Padre Island.
Residents enjoy year round access to the white sands of South Padre Island or visit Mexico for dining and shopping. Both locations are just 40 minutes away.  Harlingen has a public library and abundant volunteer opportunities. Spanish is spoken more than English.

Where to Retire in Harlingen and Home Prices

The communities are landscaped with bougainvillea, lantana and palm trees, offering habitat for tropical birds. There are active adult and 55+ communities (see link at top right).
City-data.com records the median selling price at $85,000 in late 2014, according to Zillow.com it was slightly lower. Median property taxes were $1,900 for homes with mortgages.


What is special about Harlingen

Home prices and the cost of living are low. It is near the beautiful San Padre Island beaches.

What is not special about Harlingen

Harlingen is in extreme southern Texas so it quite a distance from the rest of the U.S.  There appears to be some tension between the majority Hispanic population and Anglos.  Some residents point to this tension, others say it is a friendly, bi-cultural town.  If you are interested in Harlingen, we suggest you visit and form your own opinion.

Who will like retirement in Harlingen

People who want to be in southern Texas in a fairly large, low-key town.  Those who want to be close to the beach, but not too close, will also like it. About 3/4 of the population is Hispanic.

Harlingen’s public transportation, Rio Metro and taxis can take you where you need to go. If you are traveling via airplane, the Valley International Airport in Harlingen offers dozens of flights daily on major airlines:

Southwest Airlines flying out of Harlingen since 1976.
