What Fort Pierce is like for active adults
Fort Pierce, the Sunrise City, is a striving and vigorous community mid-way down the east coast of Florida. It is an excellent retirement community for active adults with a population just over 40,000. The downtown, located on the riverfront of the Indian River Lagoon and a waterfront park, affords residents contemporary shopping, dining and a range of entertainment and activities. Main Street Fort Pierce, Inc., a comprehensive revitalization program designed to encourage economic development in conjunction with historic preservation, has been very successful in reviving the downtown. An example of its success is the number of community festivals that it brings to the downtown.

Located about halfway down the east coast of Florida, Fort Pierce represents an alternative to living in the big city or in a very affluent community. There are many miles of unspoiled beaches along the ocean, plus plenty of waterways connected to the intercoastal.

Retirees who live in Fort Pierce find it is possible to live near the water – either the beach or the intercoastal. There are many apartment buildings that offer carefree living and varying degrees of amenities. Or retirees can choose to live in one of the many gated communities in the town or surrounding area. This diverse city is warm in the winter, has and has a rich array of choices for retirement living.

Fort Pierce has many retirement community housing options. Real estate prices in the area tend to be lower than in coastal communities. Average home price in mid-2008 was just over $140,000, down considerably from 2006.

Fort Pierce is located in St. Lucie County. Here are more resources and information on what is like to retire in Florida
