Port charlotte : Florida

What Port Charlotte is like for active adults
Port Charlotte is a suburban community to the northeast of busy Fort Myers, Florida.  Located in southern Florida, Port Charlotte attracts many retirees who come for its warm winters  - the average age is quite high at 49. Port Charlotte is an unincorporated town governed by Charlotte County.

Residential areas of the county are primarily single-family neighborhoods, along with many condos and villas. These areas are often surrounded by an easy maze of canals and estuaries, complete with hundreds of species of marine life. Dozens of active adult, 55+, developments, neighborhoods, and gated communities of every type are available in Cape Coral. Some have facilities like golf courses, clubhouses, or tennis courts - some have no facilities.

When you think of a retirement community on Florida's west coast Port Charlotte fits the definition (although plenty of non-retired folks live here too). Thousands of snow birds and retirees come because it is warm in the winter and home prices and rents are low. This is not a high profile town nor is it pretentious - but it can offer a very nice retirement lifestyle for a reasonable amount of money. The median sales price of a  home in the Cape Coral / Ft. Myers metro was $84,000 in mid 2009, less than 1/3 of the 2006 price.
