What It Is Like to Retire in Wickenburg

Wickenburg is a true western town located on the northern edge of the Sonoran desert in Arizona.  It has an interesting history and was named after a Henry Wickenburg, who was one of the first successful prospectors during the 1860's gold rush.  The Vulture Mine has produced $30 million in gold over the years. Today Wickenburg still looks like a western town as the community prides itself in preservering its ambience and tradition. In the early 1900's Guest Ranches became popular in the area as tourist arrived to experience the sunny climate and wide open spaces of the West. Today there are several Dude Ranches here, making it the Dude Ranch capital of the world.  During World War II, the Army built an airfiield where thousands of men were trained to fly gliders. After the war, home builders started development in the area. It has many interesting landmarks and buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the old City Hall and Jail, the town post office and a barber shop.
