Punta Arenas is the capital city of Chile's southernmost region and as a major port is the gateway to the Antarctic.  It is located just above the Strait of Magellan. The population is over 115,000 and comprised of descendants of many European countries as well as native Americans. It is a very a pretty city with a lovely downtown square surrounded by attractive baroque buildings. Many outdoor oriented tourists come here on their way to either Antartica or Tierro del Fuego. The Chilean navy has a major base here. The Nao Victoria Museum exhibits a full-size replica of the first ship ever to circumnavigate the world: Ferdinand Magellan's ship replica Nao Victoria. University of Magallanes (UMAG) is a university located here.

What Is Special about Punta Arenas

For people who love the outdoors and want to live in Chile Punta Arenas could be an interesting choice because of its proximity to Tierra del Fuego.  Chile is a relatively stable country with a strong economy. much less volatile than neighboring Argentina, for example. The Dreams Hotel & Casino is an extremely ambitious luxurious hotel on the harbor - it is very impressive. The downtown square is lovely. Dogs run free in town - some say you can tell the state of the economy by assessing the appearance of the local dogs.

Its location below the 46h parallel in Patagonia makes it far away from the rest of the world.

This ia a very busy port and naval base. Tourism is important. Chile's oil reserves are located here, as is some coal.

Punta Arenas is near the southwestern end of South America, just above the Strait of Magellan.  Its ocean moderated climate is surprisingly mild with January (summer) average temps in the low 50's and July (winter) averages about 34.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Punta Arenas is the largest and most important city in the area. There are a number of restaurants, the Nao Victoria, a maritime museum with important artifacts, and a very impressive casino, the Castle Dreams. University of Magallanes is located here.

Medical Facilities

As a regional center there are medical facilities in Punta Arenas.



Punta Arenas has a major airport with service to Santiago and other cities. Research crews use this airport to fly to Antarctica.  Cruise ships leave from here to there as well as the Falklands. There are ferries to other cities in the region such as Puerto Williams.
