What It Is Like to Retire in Banning

Banning is a  town of 29,000 near the San Gorgonio Pass; north of San Diego and east of Los Angeles. Palm Springs and Riverside are nearby.  It is named for Phineas Banning who was a stagecoach line operator and Father of the Port of Los Angeles.  The area was first settled by the Cahuilla Indians and then as a Spanish mission. Banning has a sister town, Beaumont, which it shares many similarities. The area is quite dry and mountains are nearby. Where to Retire in Banning and Home Prices

Since Palm Springs is only 29 miles away, the area is filled with active adult and 55+ communities, with many more to come (see Banning Active Communities link at top right, also look at our California directory under "Find a Community" box for nearby towns). 
The median home value was $299,939, in early 2021, according to Zillow.


What Is Special about Banning

If you like desert and mountains Banning is has some very interesting terrain. Banning has a number of nice parks.

It is a small, somewhat remote town. Unemployment is high. Statewide, water is a precious resource.

People who live living in the desert. County-wide, Riverside County cast 49% of its votes for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and 45% for Donald Trump.

Climate and Physical Environment

Banning is 100 miles east of Los Angeles and 25 miles west of Palm Springs. The average July high temperature is 96 and the average January low is 40. The wettest month is January (4").

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The Banning Cultural Alliance works to bring arts to the community; The Malki Museum exhibits art, artifacts, and historical materials of the Indians of the San Gorgonio Pass area; For additional culture you can go to one of the nearby Indian casinos or travel to Palm Springs. The public library opened in 1916.



Crime in Banning has been steadily dropping below the national average.

Medical Facilities

San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital serves Banning. Other hospitals are in nearby Palm Springs and Riverside.

Living in California
Who would want to live in California since democratic governor Jerry "moonbeam" Brown has run up a $16 billion debt? Taxes will go sky high on everything. Retirees beware!
