Seal Beach is  a small city of 24,000 in Orange County, California.  It is south of Los Angeles and Long Beach on the Pacific. There is good surfing, a  very long pier, and a marina. The Leisure World retirement community, with its 9,000 residents, is a large part of the city. It is claimed that Seal Beach was the first major planned retirement community in the U.S., although Sun City, Arizona might dispute that. The small gated community of Surfside Colony is also part of Seal Beach. Boeing is the largest employer. There is a Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach.

Leisure World Seal Beach is the major place for retirees to live in this town, although there are other neighborhoods such as The Hill and College Park East and West. According to Zillow, the median home value in Seal Beach was $780,857 in early 2020. Co-ops and condos in Leisure World range from the mid $100s to over $500,000.

Seal Beach is famous for its surfing as well as its wooden fishing pier, the second longest in California. Robert August, one of the 2 surfers profiled in The Endless Summer grew up in Seal Beach.

What Is Not Special about Seal Beach

Real estate, the cost of living, and taxes are high in Seal Beach (and California). In 2011 Leisure World neglected to pay its property taxes and cost its residents a $273,000 fine.

The median age is 54, much higher than normal, and reflecting the Leisure World population.

Seal Beach is on the coast south of Long Beach and Los Angeles in Orange County. Winters are mild and summers are dry.  The average January low is 46 and the average July high is 83.  February is the rainiest month with 3".

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Annual events in Seal Beach include a Classic Car Show, a Summer Concert series, the Christmas Parade, and the Kite Festival in September. The Bay Theatre is a good place for independent movies.  The Seal Beach National WIldlife Refuge is here. The long pier is popular, as are some top surfing spots.


The crime rate is low in Seal Beach.


Medical Facilities

Nearby hospitals include the ones in Los Alamitos and Long Beach.


There are numerous airports and freeways around Seal Beach, as well as buses and trains going north and south.
