Salida is a town of 5,300 located near the center of Colorado and west of Colorado Springs. Formerly a railroad, mining, and ranching town, Salida is popular with retirees looking for outdoor adventure and a laid back atmosphere. At least one magazine has named Salida a great place to retire. The nearby Monarch Ski Area is a big attraction, as are the areas mountain biking, hiking, and river rafting. Monarch Mountain looms over the town on one sie, and the Arkansas River on another. This friendly town combines a bit of a bohemian atmosphere with a working class center. The town is working to enhance pedestrian access to the town.
