What It Is Like to Retire in Steamboat Springs

Steamboat, or Ski Town USA as it called, is a mountain resort town in Colorado. Although skiing here on Mt. Werner is the main draw here in the winter and spring, the popularity of river sports on the Yampa River, mountain biking, and hiking keep it bustling year-round. The population was about 12,000 in 2011, although it can swell higher than that in peak periods.  Steamboat enjoys plenty of snow and ample sunshine. Many active adults retire here to enjoy an active lifestyle in the mountains.

Where to Retire in Steamboat Springs and Home Prices

There are many condos and homes spread along the bottom of the mountain, some of which are ski in and ski out and very luxurious. Or you can live farther out from the mountain and the bustle of this busy resort town. There are active adult communities in the area.  Since many homes are 2nd homes, the market is tough for sellers. Zillow reports the median home value was $648,085 in early 2020.


What Is Special about Steamboat Springs

Steamboat is one of the finest ski mountains in North America. The annual Yampa River Festival attracts thousands for boat races and fun. There is also a winter carnival.

What Is Not Special about Steamboat Springs

The area is expensive unless you have strong financial resources.

The people who choose to live and or retire in Steamboat Springs tend to be active outdoor people who love the mountains.

Tourism is the major part of the economy in Steamboat.

Climate and Physical Environment

Steamboat is just west of the Continental Divide in North central Colorado, west of Fort Collins and the Routt National Forest. The median January temperature is in the teens; the median July temp is in the low 60's.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

One of the attractions of being a resort town is having a wide and ever-changing array of restaurant choices.  Outdoors culture is the dominant culture here.


The crime rate is below average.

Medical Facilities

The Yampa Valley Medical Center serves the area.


Route 40 goes through town. Steamboat Springs/Bob Adams Field Airport is a small city owned airport and bad weather can shut it down.  A larger airport, Yampa Valley Airport is about 25 miles away in Hayden, and the nearest International Airport is in Denver, about 180 miles away. Steamboat Springs is above average in walkability when compared to other  communities.
