Chester : England

What It Is Like to Retire in Chester

Chester, a town of about 77,000 that is south of Liverpool, is one of the most interesting towns in England. It is a former Roman outpost and then medieval city.  The walls from the latter era still almost completely surround Chester, and it is one of the best preserved walled cities in the British Isles. Chester has a number of medieval buildings, but some of the black-and-white buildings within the city centre are actually Victorian restorations.  Tourism is very important to the local economy. The city's central shopping area includes its unique Rows (two levels of shops) which date from medieval times. The Rows includes what is believed to be the oldest shop front in England.
