What It Is Like to Retire in Grayslake

Grayslake is a village of about 21,000 about 40 miles north of Chicago. It iis  home to the College of Lake County, the University Center of Lake County and the Lake County Fairgrounds.  There are several lakes in town including the largest, Grays Lake.  The village has several very nice parks including Central Park, an aquatic center, and a relatively new and large library building. There are 2 public golf courses, and 2 Metra stations with service to Milwaukee and Chicago. Where to Retire in Grayslake and Home Prices

There are active adult and senior communities in the area (see link at top left). The median home value in late 2020 was $231,380 according to Zillow.
 

What Is Special about Grayslake

The lakes in town are nice for swimming, boating, fishing and skating in the winter; there are many parks, a family Aquatic Center, and a county preserve with trails and walkways; the College of Lake County and its 5800 students are a nice addition to this affluent town.

Who Will Like Retirement in Grayslake

Retirees who want to live close to Chicago but in a small town with a lot of outdoor recreation may enjoy living here. Grayslake is home to College of Lake County, a nice library, health care and has easy access to downtown Chicago via the Metro line; O'Hare International Airport is about 40 miles away.

Health care and manufacturing drive the economy.

January's average temperature is 24 degrees, July's average is 72 degrees. Grayslake gets about 43 inches of snow annually.
 

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

There are several restaurants and pubs in Grayslake. The cultural scene consist of the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum that features multiple exhibition galleries, a classroom, a community room, and archives. Grayslake's Village Center is located in the heart of the Village. It includes the historic downtown with its antique lighting, historic storefronts, and small businesses.

The crime rate is less than half the national average.

There are medical facilities located in Grayslake.
 

Transportation

Thanks to 2 Metra stations Grayslake has commuter rail service to Milwaukee and Chicago. The nearest international airport is in Chicago, about 40 miles away. Grayslake also has a community-wide trail system that is approximately 20 miles and connects with other trails.
