Fishers : Indiana

What It Is Like to Retire in Fishers

Fishers is a fast growing town of 76,000 that is about 13 miles from Indianapolis. The town is both quite affluent (HH income of $76,000) and young (average age 33).  It has an impressive number of parks, highly rated schools, and a roster of big name employers such as Sallie Mae and Roche. Our impression on a recent visit was this might be a good place to raise a family but not a place you would want to retire too, since everything is spread out and you must drive everywhere. The downtown is very smalll and lacks charm. The city has ranked highly in numerous "Best" awards such as Best Place to Raise a Family, Best Town for Undiscovered Golf, etc. Photo of City Hall courtesy of Wikipedia.

Where to Retire in Fishers and Home Prices

There is at least one large active adult community in Fishers (see link at left), as well as numerous fine neighborhoods and developments in the general community. The median price of a home here was $344,323 in mid-2021 (Zillow), and median property taxes just over $2,000.

What Is Special about Fishers

FIshers is fast growing with a good economic base.  Light rail will be coming through here on its way to Indianapolis. There are 3 annual festivals and at least a dozen parks. The town has won numerous "Best" awards.

What Is Not Special about Fishers

While Fishers might be fine for growing families it could be tough for retirees. Everything is spread out and you cannot walk to anything.  Biking would over long distances and busy roads.  Hopefully its fast growth will be controlled and not result in sprawl and traffic.

Who Will Like Retirement in Fishers

Retirees who want a mid-sized town not far from Indianapolis that offers parks, transportation, and events would enjoy retiring here. For seniors, the community offers 50 or Better programs through the Parks and Recreation Department and a Morning Call Network to check on those living alone.  Fishers also has a Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan to increase the safety and mobilitiy of residents.  The community is host to events, fesitvals, a farmers market, and volunteer opportunities.

Local Economy Is Driven by

Besides being a home to many Indianapolis commuters, the city has a diversified economic base and a solid development plan. Unemployment is much lower than the national average.

Climate and Physical Environment

Fishers is home to Symphony on the Prairie, a summer concert series presented by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
