East Lansing, Michigan, located directly east of Lansing, has a population of 48,844 (2017 census) and by all means is a college town as it is best known as the home of Michigan State University, founded in 1855, and a member of the Big Ten Conference. With an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 39,000 students, the average age in East Lansing is only 21 years. The vibrant downtown is centered around Grand River Avenue which is lined with shops, cafes, restaurants, and bookstores. It also divides the city from the MSU campus. The town is made up of more than 25 neighborhoods, and most are governed by neighborhood associations. Some restrict renting, and there are several new housing subdivisions and separate student apartment complexess. Within a mile of campus and downtown East Lansing are neighborhoods with a mixture of students and year-round residents. The National Association of Realtors reported in the last quarter of 2021, that the median sale price of a home was $191,500.

What Is Special about East Lansing

East Lansing is made up of many neighborhoods, parks and a walkable downtown with shops and restaurants. It also sponsors many community events each year and is bike-friendly. The Northern Tier Trail is a paved pathway that connects the many community parks; the Hannah Community center features the Albert A. White Performing Arts Theatre; there is an aquatic center, library, and art galleries. Not to mention all that MSU offers culturally and the many sporting events on campus.

What Is Not Special about East Lansing

East Lansing is not just a college town, the college is the town. There are approximately 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students living in the area, so you would have to enjoy the college vibe and being in the mix. The winter weather is dreary with many cloudy days.

Retiree who want to live in a mid-sized college town with a lot going on would enjoy East Lansing. The town offers Prime Time for seniors which is a nationally accredited program that provides physical, social and vocational dimensions of wellness and encourages involvement in the community. East Lansing is also host many events, has a library, an aquatic center, museum and performing arts center.

There are many restaurants here offering all types of cuisine, along with pubs, cafes and delis. Culturally, East Lansing offers events, a museum and performing arts center, art galleries. Metrospace, located downtown features contemporary artworks and host musical performances. Michigan State University offers much to the cultural scene with the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts along with the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden and the MSU Horticulture Gardens. And then there is Big Ten sports...


The crime rate here is low compared to the national average.

East Lansing has public bus transportation provided by CATA; an Amtrak station is located here, and the Capital Region International Airport is in nearby Lansing; there are paved trails for walking and biking including the Lansing River Trail and the Northern Tier Trail; the city is bike friendly.
