What It Is Like to Retire in Boulder City

Boulder City was built by the government in 1931 to house workers for the Hoover Dam. The population was 14,885 (2020 Census), and is located about 30 miles from Las Vegas. Today the town appeals to a mix of residents including a thriving senior community. Great small town atmosphere, the city has a strict growth policy. There are lots of local shops, restaurants, parks and other attractions. The city has several festivals throughout the year, a private airport and two public golf courses. The price of homes here have been on the rise the last few years, and Zillow reports the median home value was $494,288 in mid-2022, up over 22% during the past year.

The average age is 47, higher than the U.S. average, a pretty good indication that retirees make up a sizable part of the population. People who like the desert and boating will like it here.

Local Economy Is Driven by

Tourism is the main driving force behind the economy. Most tourists visit the town due to Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. The city has an upscale downtown district designed for tourists with shops, restaurants and a movie theater that shows special productions.

Climate and Physical Environment

Boulder City is in the southern tip of Nevada near Arizona and Utah. Average winter temperature is in the mid 40's with the average July temp about 90. This is a desert, relieved by the presence of Lake Mead.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The Boulder City Library has an impressive operating budget over $1.5 million.  There is a municipal golf course. Las Vegas is within 20 miles so there is plenty of culture and entertainment there.


The crime rate is quite low with an index of 81 vs. the national average of 270 (2019).

Medical Facilities

Boulder City has its own hospital and emergency room. The next closest hospital is located in Henderson, which is roughly a 15 minute drive.


Citizens Area Transit (city bus) has routes that include Boulder City.
