What It Is Like to Retire in Deming

Deming is a town of almost 15,000 that is 60 miles west of Las Cruces.  Here is how our member, Glenda, who lived here for a time, describes the town: "It is a small town with a slow pace of living. Everyone knows everyone. Retirees have been moving there for many years. Low cost of living. Located on Interstate 10. Las Cruces is 60 miles to the east and Tucson, AZ is 220 miles to the west. Hatch Valley, which is a famous chili producing area is 50 miles to the north. Deming is a big farming and ranching community. Yes, I would say it is a good place to retire."Photo of A view of City of Rocks courtesy of Wikipedia and Geywets (public domain); photo of Deming Luna Mimbres Museum courtesy of Wikipedia and AllenS in the public domain.

What people are saying about Deming

Deming, NM
Spent a lot of time in the area, though not specifically in the town of Deming. That area of southern NM is pretty remote. If you really like the solitude, maybe an artist for example, it might appeal to you there, especially since Silver City, a sort of funky, old hippie style artist town with a small college is not far to the north and has a very nice summer getaway climate with some pines and junipers. Those towns along the I10 corridor will probably have kind of a \"truck stop\" feel to them, plus you will find that lack of zoning means you might find yourself with a nice home next to a \"junky\" property. There are some water issues in that area that should be closely pondered when looking at real estate. There are plenty of mountain ranges as a backdrop, but the scenery in general is flat, dusty desert scrub. It\'s more a place that people drive past on the freeway, in my opinion, but again the solitude, sunshine, and open country might be appealing to some.
