CORE is the town's Center of Recreational Excellence and features swimming pools, gym, track, pickleball, basketball and turf sports. The town is also popular with soaring and glider planes for both pilots and spectators.

Hobbs is a bit isolated with no large city nearby. Lubbock, Texas, is about 100 miles away, and Albuquerque is about 260 miles away; summers are hot; crime rate is high.
