What It Is Like to Retire in Lebanon-NH

 Lebanon is located in western New Hampshire, south of Hanover, and near the Connecticut River. Lebanon is home to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Dartmouth Medical School.  it has been described as the quintessential New England town because it is pretty and has many key institutions clustered around the town green. It has a vibrant business community; medical facilities associated with nearby Dartmouth are the largest employers in town. Recreation on the river and nearby mountains are terrific. The population was a little over 13,500 in 2013. Livability.com named it the best small town in America in 2015. 

The Colburn Park Historic District consists of twenty-three structures facing a large, rectangular green in the town center called Colburn Park. Since the late 18th century, the town's buildings have grouped themselves around the common in rectangular fashion. Lebanon is a small town and does experience cold snowy winters.

The multiple medical centers and cancer center in the area stimulate this economy. NH is considered a tax-friendly state.


Climate and Physical Environment

Mild, sunny summers and cold, snowy winters are hallmarks of the Lebanon climate. Average January temps are in the high teens and the average July temp is about 70. It is located on the CT river near Dartmouth College.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Being this close to Dartmouth College is a real plus in terms of both culture and restaurants. Salt Hill Pub and Three Tomatoes are 2 of the restaurants singled out.  There is an Opera House on the Green.



Crime is significantly below the national average (index of 220 vs 321).
