Greenville is a fast-growing residential community of 85,000 located in Pitt County in the eastern part of North Carolina. The population grew over 40% from 2000 to 2010. Many active adults choose this as their retirement community because of it proximity to Pamlico Sound and the Outer Banks, its mild weather, and an economical life style. The community is a young one, the average age is 26. Greenville is in Pitt County. East Carolina University and its 26,000 students make Greenville a college town.
The town was recognized as "Sportstown USA" by Sports Illustrated and the National Parks and Recreation Association. Thanks to its numerous sports facilities Greenville has hosted many important events such as the Girls Softball Babe Ruth World Series, the Beast of the East Soccer Tournament, and the North Carolina State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament. The North Carolina Senior Games and the Eastern Regional High School Basketball tournament are held here annually. Pitt County has over twenty parks with hundreds of acres of hiking, fishing and boating. Water sports are popular on the Tar River and four lakes in the area.
