Oak Island, North Carolina, is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Brunswick County, about 30 miles south of Wilmington. The seaside town is situated mostly on the barrier island, which also is home to the town of Caswell Beach, and extends onto the mainland. The town has a population of close to 7,000, but with its miles of beaches, fishing docks, and boating, the population grows to about 40,000 during the summer months.
Oak Island is very popular with retirees and has an average age of 54, but is also a family-friendly beach community and summer vacation destination. A new four lane bridge was opened in 2011, which makes getting to Oak Island easier, and will promote more development.
