New Braunfels, TX is famous with tourists and retirees for its rich German heritage, festivals, and medical access. Some say this very rapidly town of over 90,000 grew by over 56% since 2010, and offers the best lifestyle for the money for senior citizens in South central Texas. People love the weather, excellent health care, beautiful hill country and safe living environment, and many good restaurants.  New Braunfels is over-flowing with old world heritage and small town Texas charm. Visit New Braunfels' great museums, historic districts, and performing arts with a walking tour.  The Gruene Historical District is a big tourist attraction. Where to Retire in New Braunfels and Home Prices

There are garden homes and duplexes for downsizing, either in different neighborhoods or master planned communities (see active communities link at left). The National Association of Realtors reports the median sale price in the San Antonio-New Braunfels area to be $349,500 during the 2nd quarter of 2022.


What Is Special about New Braunfels

There is something different  to do every day in New Braunfels. It has an interesting history since it was formed by German settlers. It is very popular with retirees and tourists. A highlight for tourists and nearby residents is an annual tube down the Guadalupe River and Comal River, which run through town.The nearby Texas Hill Country has many attractions. The annual WurstFest is a highlight of the year. Being close to San Antonio is also a plus. There is a waterpark in town. In the 2020 Census, New Braunfels was the third fastest growing city in America.

Active retirees tend to like New Braunfels because it always seems like there is a festival or restaurant to go to.

Climate and Physical Environment

New Braunfels is 30 miles northeast of San Antonio and 45 miles from Austin in south central Texas. The average July high is 95 and the average January low is 35. May is the wettest month (5"). Two rivers run through town, which was key to why the town attracted its original German settlers.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The New Braunfels Railroad Museum is a popular attraction, as are the many festivals such as the WurstFest in November. Several cultural events are held at the New Braunfels Civic and Convention Center. A look at the Chamber of Commerce community calendar (see link below) provides a dizzying array of daily activities. The historic Gruene District is quite interesting.


The crime rate is below average.

Medical Facilities

McKenna Hospital serves New Braunfels, in addition to the many hospitals in San Antonio.


San Antonio and its airport are about 25 miles away.
