Sugar Land is one of the fastest-growing and affluent cities in Texas, located approximately 20 miles south of downtown Houston. The area started as a sugar plantation and was built as a company town of the Imperial Sugar Company in 1910, with housing, shops and a hospital built for the workers. During the 1960’s housing developments and planned communities sprang up along with golf courses, swimming pools and highways. By the early 2000s, the city saw a 150% increase in its diverse population, and the town continues to grow, with a 2019 census reporting 118,488 residents.
Sugar Land is now home to many large-scale master-planned communities. A branch campus of Wharton County Junior College and a branch campus of the University of Houston are both located here, and it is the home of the Sugar Land Skeeters Minor League Baseball team. WalletHub has recently ranked Sugar Land in the top five Best Small Cities to Live in America, and recognized it as one of the Fastest-Growing Cities in America. Sugar Land is made up of many master-planned communities, and may have the largest number of them in the country. Most of these communities feature golf courses, an array of amenities, and country clubs. There are also a number of the original homes built by the Imperial Sugar Company, and have been passed down by generations of family members. According to Zillow, the median home value was $348,147 in mid-2021.

Sugar Land is not considered a walkable town, although the many individual neighborhoods and master-planned communities provide sidewalks and trails within them. Fort Bend County Public Transit provides service to Houston. Sugar Land Regional Airport serves corporate, governmental, and private clientele. The George Bush Intercontinental Airport is about 40 miles away in Houston. Sugar Land has a master plan for providing a network of pedestrian and bicycle routes throughout the city. With the proposed Mobility Plan, all modes of transportation will be encompassed including walking, biking, driving, and/or taking transit.
