What It Is Like to Retire in Washington

Washington is a growing town of almost 19,000 in extreme soutwestern Utah. The popular retirement destination of St. George is nearby.   Washington itself is not a particularly interesting town. There is a downtown with a Historical Museum and impressive church (Latter Day Saints), but not much else. The population grew 129% in the last 10 years, much of that from retirees moving here. This is a very dry area with a warmer winter climate than much of Utah. The Red Cliffs National Conservation Area and Red Cliffs Desert Reserve is north of Washington, as is Zion National Park.


Where to Retire in Washington and Home Prices

Zillow reports the median list price of a home to be $476,781 in mid-2021.There is at least one big active communities in Washington, with many more in nearby St. George. See our Utah Directory for listings. Golf is a popular feature of many of these communities.


What Is Special about Washington

The concentration of active communities makes this an appealing area for retirement. So does the climate, which is dry and offers low humidity. The desert scenery and nearby national parks are a big draw for outdoor oriented folks. The city has at least 10 parks as well as a public golf course, the Green Spring Golf Course. There is a 110,000 sq.ft. Community Center with indoor acquatic center that is a big draw.


What Is Not Special about Washington

Many people will find the area too remote. Las Vegas is 114 miles away, while Phoenix is more than 200. 


Who Will Like Retirement in Washington

People who like the outdoors, golf, and living in a dry environment might like it here. The area is very Republican.


Local Economy Is Driven by

Retirement and construction are big contributors to the economy.


Climate and Physical Environment

Washington has a hot, desert environment in summer. Winters are relatively mild for Utah. Humidity is low. Average January temperatures are in the low 40s and average July temperature in high 80s.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

There is not too much going on in Washington except for recreation and a few festivals. The Washington Historical Museum is downtown. St. George will provide more options.



The crime rate is much lower than the national average for both property and violent crime categories.


Medical Facilities

Dixie Regional Medical Center in nearby St. George provides acute care and emergency services. Other hospitals are in Mesquite, NV.



Interstate 15 runs through town. St. George has a good new airport.

Utah retirement
Try Duchesne , Utah , weather less extreme and small town living , close to other towns with more to do and good health facilities in Roosevelt. Great place to retire. Have lovely log home we have to sell there mls1086831 , but hate having to leave!
