Dubois is a small, remote town in Fremont County, Wyoming, located in the valley below the Absarokas and the Wind River Mountains, the tallest mountain range in Wyoming. It is surrounded by the Shoshone National Forest, and is home to many types of wildlife including deer, elk, moose, eagles, and mountain bluebirds. The population is under 1,000, but nearly doubles in the summer months as photographers, writers and artists are drawn here in part by the beautiful scenery. It is also popular with those who enjoy fishing, hunting, hiking, kayaking and winter sports of every kind.  But it is for those who are fit and hearty, as the town of Dubois sits at an elevation of about 7,000 feet, and hikes can take you up to 10,000 feet. The average age here is surprisingly 47 years.

Dubois' claims to fame is that it may be the only place on earth to see all 3 mountain-building processes (volcanic, tectonic, and glacial) from one location, and Butch Cassidy (Robert LeRoy Parker) owned and managed a ranch on the outskirts of Dubois, beginning in 1890. It is said that he was a frequent customer at Welty's General Store here, which is still in operation.

Dubois is small but offers many different types of housing-from manufactured homes, cabins, and codos, to million dollar homes with scenic views.  The average selling price of a home is in the mid-$100's.

The location offers mountains and a national forest with beautiful scenery, hiking, camping and all types of recreation, along with museums and art galleries.


What Is Not Special about Dubois

This small, isolated town is for those who are healthy and in good shape. The nearest pharmacy and hospital are both 80 miles away; If you don't enjoy outdoor activities, it may not be the place for you.

Tourism drives the economy, there are B&B's, camping areas, and Ranches.


Climate and Physical Environment

 Dubois is located in the Wind River Valley which keep temperatures cool in the summer and fairly mild in the winter. But temperatures can fluctuate widely in a day.  The average January temperature is between 12 and 37 degrees, with July ranging from the high 70's during the day to low 40's at night.


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The town is home to restaurants, a library, museums, and art galleries, along with the Headwaters Community Arts and Conference Center which hosts seminars, exhibits, and musical performances; The National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center portrays the habitat and habits of Bighorn sheep, as Dubois is home to one of the nation's largest herds; The town also hosts festivals, rodeos, and square dances. 



The crime rate in Dubois is low.

Dubois has a small medical office, but nearest hospital is 80 miles away.



Dubois has a small municipal airport with an airstip for private planes; the nearest regional airports are in Riverton or Jackson Hole both 75 miles away;  The nearest international airport is in Salt Lake City 370 miles away.
