What It Is Like to Retire in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is a Spanish island and the easternmost of the autonomous Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean. The island is approximately 125 km off the coast of Africa and 1,000 km from the Iberian Peninsula. It is the fourth largest of the islands. Most of the inhabitants are of Spanish decent. This island has been named as an interesting and low cost place to retire, which also benefits from a lower cost of living. The capital, Arrecife, has a population of 59,000. Townsend is a very small town of about 800 people in northwest Delaware, south of Middletown and north of Smyrna.
Where to Live and Real Estate Prices
Although Townsend is a very tiny town this area has been a magnet for active adult and 55+ communities (see link at right). Median home prices in late 2009 were just under $300,000 (probably biased upwards by prices in the new 55+ communities).

Crime
Augusta attracts a community of adults who want an active lifestyle and who want to live in the south in a diverse culture (about 50% of the residents of the county are African-American). Many former military personnel live here.
Medical facilities
There are no nearby commercial airports, but Baltimore, New Castle, and Philadelphia are reasonably close.
Transportation
Arrecife has an international airport which is fairly busy thanks to tourism.
