Berlin : Connecticut

What It Is Like to Retire in Berlin

Berlin is an old city between New Haven and Hartford. The population is just over 20,000 and growing.  It is a residential and industrial town. It's roots go back to the 1760's when it became a center for "white goods" production, which intrepid Yankee Peddlers sold from the streets across colonial America (hence the image on the seal). Where to Retire in Berlin and Home Prices

Berlin (pronounced with the accent on the 1st syllable, as in Ber' lin) has many different neighborhoods and developments, with at least one active adult community (see link at left). There are 2 hamlets: East Berlin and Kensington.  According to Zillow, the median home value $281,012 in early 2020.

What Is Special about Berlin

Berlin has a good location between New Haven and close to Hartford. There is a big commercial district along the Berlin Turnpike.

What Is Not Special about Berlin

There is considerable traffic and it feels very commercial.  Connecticut is one of the worst states to retire from a financial and tax standpoint.

Who Will Like Retirement in Berlin

People who want to be in CT and have roots here might like a retirement here. There are parks, a library and a senior center.

Local Economy Is Driven by

Manufacturing and retail drive the economy.

Climate and Physical Environment

The city is located just south of Hartford in the geographic center of Connecticut. The average January temp is in the mid 20's and the average July temp in the low 70's. There are many hills and ridges such as the Metacomet Ridge nearby.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Berlin has several restaurants; for the cultural scene the Connecticut Cabaret Theatre is located here and presents several cabaret-style shows during the year. Hartford is just about 10 miles north of Berlin for many more cultural events.

Crime rate is quite low.

Medical Facilities

Hartford and New Haven offer a variety of great hospitals.

Route 9 is a good highway that goes through town, as does I 91.  There is an AMTRAK station, and Bradley Airport (Hartford/Springfield) is but a short drive.
