What it's Like to Retire in Redding

Redding is an extremely affluent suburban community of about 8,000 people in eastern Connecticut.  The median Household income is over $120,000 and unemployment is about 5%.  The town is situated in a beautiful part of the state (see photo above of Huntingdon Park courtesy of Wikipedia and AskJoanne).  Mark Twain lived here late in life and gave many of his books to the town - today it is home to the Mark Twain Library (also pictured above).

There are retirement communities here and in surrounding towns.  Zillow reports the median home value to be $536,400 in mid-2017.

There is not much of a downtown. It is extremely expensive to live here, and most of the residents leave town to work in New York or suburban centers.
 

Who will like retirement in Redding

Retirees looking for a small, pretty, and quiet New England town would enjoy living here.  The town offers two State Parks, over 60 miles of hiking trails, a library that is the hub of cultural activity, and a very active senior center that provides lectures, a "cultural cafe", exercise classes, lunch, and transportation.

January's average temperature is about 27 degrees, with July's average about 73 degrees. Redding gets approximately 40 inches of snow annually. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy's tropical force winds reached Redding causing tree damage.

Redding is home to a community center and library that provides the town with lectures, clubs and classes.  The community hosts annual events and boasts parks, trails and community gardens.  In 2017 it celebrated its Sestercentinnial (250 years) with a host of activities.

Redding has a low crime rate.

 

Medical facilities

Danbury Hospital is about 10 miles away.

 

Transportation

There is train service and a regional airport in New Haven, about 40 miles away; La Guardia is the closest international airport, about 55 miles away.
