What Is Special about Chesterfield Township

The community features a lake with boating and marinas, hiking, and parks. It offers a low cost of living and is close to a major city (Detroit). The Historical Society here is dedicated to preserving the history of the township and is very active offering programs and events.

The area is cold in the winter with over 40 inches of snow; property taxes are higher here than in most Michigan counties.

Those looking to retire in a waterfront community who enjoy boating and fishing would enjoy living here. It has a low crime rate, and housing costs are lower than the national average. The township also boasts a library, hospital, parks, and a very active senior center with exercise classes, book clubs, and a variety of events and programs along with day and overnight trips. It also provides free transportation for seniors.

Manufacturing drives the economy. Lionel Trains have not been made here since 2002, but Chesterfield still continues to be Lionel's corporate office headquarters and home to its non-manufacturing support functions.

Lake St. Clair features a mile of shoreline and a 1,6000 foot boardwalk and is a popular place for boaters, fishermen and swimmers. The Chesterfield Historical Society is an important and active part of the community and presents many programs, festivals, and events. Because Chesterfield Township is made up of several communities, there are many parks that offer a lot to do which includes Pollard Park, made up of 128 acres and offers baseball fields, soccer fields, and hike and bike paths, Brandenburg Park is a waterfront park on the shores of Anchor Bay and features tennis, boat launches, a picnic area, horseshoes and volleyball. History buffs will enjoy Chesterfield Township's Historical Village, Michigan Transit Museum, Selfridge Military Air Museum and Stahl's Automotive Foundation's vintage vehicle collections. For Cultural events and great restaurants, Detroit is nearby.


The crime rate here is low.

The township offers Senior Transportation Services; the nearest international airport is in Windsor, Canada, about 45 miles away, Detroit's airport is about 50 miles away.
