What it's Like to Retire in Cloudcroft

The quiet community of Cloudcroft, true to its name, is among the mountains at an elevation of 8,600 feet and overlooks the mammoth Lincoln National Forest.  This unusally high altitude gives it a surprisingly mild summer temperature. It's rustic, a little sleepy, and home to the infamous and fabulous Lodge Resort and Spa. Cloudcroft is a popular tourist destination from west Texans.  It is located in south central New Mexico. There are plenty of charming cabins tucked into the forests of the mountains. 

The median home listing price was about $225,000 in late 2017, according to Zillow.

The striking beauty of the scenery , its unusally high altitude, and relative remoteness makes this community an attractive mountain getaway. Forbes once named Cloudcroft one of the "Most Overlooked and Underrated Destination Spots".

Cloudcroft has some problems with water scarcity; most residents store back up tanks in case.

Climate and Physical Environment

The climate is a large draw of the community: the air is dry, with summers that can be over 80, and winter temperatures in the 20s. 


Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Cloudcroft is home to three festivals which take place at Zenith Park. Arts and crafts are sold from local and regional artists, live music and entertainment is provided, activities and competitions are held, and local civic groups and churches sell traditional fair food.  The Memorial Day May Fair, the July Jamboree (on the 4th), and Octoberfest are the festivals and cultural events occuring every year here.



Crime in Cloudcroft is very low.


Medical facilities

The Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center is in nearby Alamogordo.



Cloudcroft is accessible via Highway 82.
