What It Is Like to Retire in Boone

Boone, Heart of the High Country, is  located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina.  The population of this town named for Daniel Boone, was 17,122 in 2010, but seems to be growing very fast. A college town, Boone is the home of Appalachian State University which is very large and very much a part of the town. On a recent visit the streets were thronged with students, tourists, and residents. The downtown is interesting with shops and restaurants. The highlight of the summer season is an outdoor amphitheatre portrayal of the life and times of its namesake in "Home in the West". Don't miss our Retirement Tour of the western Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia where we talk about Boone and other interesting towns.

Banner Elk/Sugar Mountain Near Boone, NC
About 15 miles from Boone, NC are the towns of Sugar Mountain, Banner Elk and about 5 miles more Beech Mountain. We live 5 months a year in Retirement at Sugar Top Resort, a 320 unit Condo Complex at 5200\' elevation with a spectacular view of Grandfather Mountain. Swell place to keep cool in our retirement flight from our South Alabama heat (residents & owners mostly Florida refugees) was 50 degrees this am 7/25/19 on out patio! Local towns up here compete for retirement $ with free concerts and activities especially in Summer. I will send along some Sunrise pictures from today which are great!
