Marblehead is a small waterfront village in Ottawa County, Ohio, and sits at the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula, which divides Lake Erie from Sandusky Bay. The town, with a population of 854 (2020 Census), and a median age of 56 years, is a popular summer tourist destination and features quaint streets lined with shops and restaurants, a state park, sport fishery, and is home to Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve and Lakeside Chautauqua. Marblehead also provides ferry service to Lake Erie Islands such as Kelly’s Island and Put-In-Bay. Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest continuous operating lighthouse in on the American side of the Great Lakes, has guided sailors along the rocky shores of Marblehead Peninsula since 1822. Where to Retire in Marblehead and Home Prices

Home choices include single-family homes, cottages, condos and apartments. Marblehead contains many summer and second homes that residents of nearby Toledo, Cleveland, and Columbus visit during the tourist season. Zillow reports the median home value was $344,041, in early 2022. There are homes along the lake that sell in the $millions. Lakeside Chautauqua has homes and cottages but the rentals are pricey.
 

What Is Special about Marblehead

Marblehead is part of the area know as Vacationland and referred to as Lake Erie’s Shores and Islands, which includes the nearby islands of Put-in-Bay and Kelley’s Island which are very popular during the summer months; the scenic town offers a lot of outdoor recreation for all seasons including ice fishing charters in the winter; East Harbor State Park is also located here and features sandy beaches, hiking trails, boating and camping.
 

What Is Not Special about Marblehead

If you don't enjoy outdoor activities you may not find much to do; long, cold winters; it is a little bit isolated with the nearest large city, Toledo, about an hour away, Cleveland is 80 miles from Marblehead and Columbus is 125 miles away.
 

Who Will Like Retirement in Marblehead

The small waterfront community has a very low crime rate, a hospital nearby, a library, and two state parks. It hosts several events, and has a summer farmers market, and a walkable downtown with shops and restaurants.
 

Local Economy Is Driven by

Marblehead's economy is driven by its recreational tourism due to its lakeside location and offers fishing, boating, retail and dining venues. Marblehead is also a major limestone producer which is mined in nearby quarries.
 

Climate and Physical Environment

Marblehead sits on the tip of a peninsula with beautiful views of Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay. It experiences four distinct seasons with January's average temperature 29 degrees (not including wind chill temperatures!), and July's average 72 degrees. The average annual snowfall is 24".
 

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Situated on a peninsula, Marblehead is of course outdoor orientated, and is home to East Harbor State Park and to Marblehead Lighthouse State Park. There are several restaurants with good reviews from Tripadvisor.com, including locally owned and a wine bar, with more eateries to choose from during the busy summer season. Marblehead hosts several popular summer events which sees thousands of visitors each year. An art gallery is located here, along with the Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society Museum which displays photos and artifacts of the history of the Lighthouse, but the cultural scene is provided by Lakewood Chautauqua, an interesting summer, and gated community that is part of the Chautauqua Movement, and provides a variety of cultural, intellectual, spiritual and physical learning opportunities.
 

Crime

The crime rate here is very low even during the busy summer season.
 

Medical Facilities

Magruder Hospital is about 12 miles away in Port Clinton.
 

Transportation

The nearest airport is Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, about 70 miles away.
