What It Is Like to Retire in Daufuskie Island

Daufuskie Island is located between Savannah, Georgia, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and is just 8 square miles with a full time population of under 500 residents.  The island is made up of a couple of private resorts, residential communities and undeveloped land.  Its history dates back from pre-Colonial days, and was named a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.  In 2001, the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation was founded to preserve its historic and cultural heritage with museums, historical sites, and trails around the island.  The Daufuskie Island Conservancy helps to preserve the ecosystem, flora and fauna.  The island has its own Fire and Rescue Department, a few shops, and a small elementary school.  There are no bridges to Daufuskie Island and all access to it is by boat.  Picture of Haig Point Lighthouse courtesy of Wikipedia and Carol M.
