What it's Like to Retire in Aberdeen

Aberdeen, South Dakota is a town of 27,000 in northeastern South Dakota. For a town of its size it has an impressive collection of amenities. In the sporting department it has 3 golf courses (2 of them 18 holes), 2 disc golf courses, 24 tennis courts in multiple locations, several public skating/ice hockey rinks, a skate park, and a Family Aquatic Center (outdoors so it is summer only) with  a zero entry pool, competition lap pool, numerous water slides, and a concession area. Where to Retire in Aberdeen and Home Prices

According to Zillow.com the median home price in late 2012 was $146,500, slightly below both the U.S. and the SD median. City-Data reported the median home sale at $127,000 for 2011. We are not aware of any active adult communities in the area.

 

What is special about Aberdeen

Aberdeen has a very impressive collection of amenties for a town of its size. It was highlighted in a recent Topretirements article showcasing some of the top retirement towns in the U.S. for amenities. South Dakota has a healthy economy and no income tax.

 

What is not special about Aberdeen

It is cold in winter and a long drive to major cities.

People who want to retire in the midwest in a low tax state, and who want to enjoy a town with plentiful amenities.

 

Local economy is driven by

St. Lukes Hospital, the schools, and Wells Fargo Auto Finance are the major employers.

 

Climate and Physical Environment

Aberdeen is in the northeastern corner of South Dakota in the James River Valley. The average January temp is 10 and the average July temp 70.

 

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

For culture there is the Aberdeen Community Theater plus two colleges: Northern State University and Presentation College (Catholic). The Aberdeen Community Theatre performs at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Aberdeen. The ArtWorks Cooperative is a partnership of artists who work to market their artwork in a gallery setting

 

Crime

The crime rate is about 2/3 the national average.

 

Medical facilities

Avera St. Lukes Hospital serves the Aberdeen area.

 

Transportation

Delta Express offers commuter flights from the Aberdeen Regional Airport.
