Canyon Lake is a  fast growing town of about 23,000 in central Texas about 16 miles from New Braunfels and just north of San Antonio.  The area is becoming popular with retirees - the average age is 45. Canyon Lake (actually a reservoir completed in 1964) is a recreation center for the region. The Corps of Engineers maintains 8 park areas around the lake for camping, swimming, boating and picnicking. There are several boat ramps for access to the lake. Hiking biking and equestrian trails are available, as well as limited hunting.


Where to Retire in Canyon Lake and Home Prices

There are 6 communities on the Lake including Hancock and Canyon City. According to Zillow, the median home value was $298,933 in early 2021.


What Is Special about Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake (8,300 acres) provides plentiful recreation. Texas is a low tax state (no income tax). The Chamber of Commerce describes it as where green rolling hills meet the crystal waters of Canyon Lake and the Guadalupe River. It is called the Water Recreation Capital of Texas.

What Is Not Special about Canyon Lake

This is a new town so you will not find old charm (although it is available in nearby New Braunfels).
