Ashland is a very charming small town of about 7,000 people that is 15 miles north of Richmond. Ashland was originally developed as a resort for the wealthy of Richmond. It is an interesting mix - there are nice shopping plazas and a large YMCA as you come off of I 95 towards town, followed by the classic old town of Ashland. The main street is split by the main railroad from Washington to Richmond, which creates an unusual but very pleasant ambiance. The town is a popular spot for train watchers. There is a working train station which doubles as a tourist bureau. There are good restaurants, an inn, and the campus of Randolph-Macon College right downtown.
