The Results Are in: Where You Are Thinking about Retiring
Category: Best Retirement Towns and States
March 24, 2020 — Thanks to the just under 100 community-minded Members and visitors who have contributed to our call to tell us where they are thinking about retiring. We really appreciate you selflessly taking a minute to share your hopes, dreams, and experiences for the benefit of this community. We wish more people had responded, but there is still time (which a lot of us seem to have right now!) You can see the original request and all of the Comments in their entirety here. Reading them is most interesting!
In all, 23 states and 2 countries were mentioned as potential retirement destinations. Many people mentioned regions rather than states. Multiple states and towns, some very different from one another, were often in the mix. Not all of the choices were predictable. We hope you find these real-world suggestions as useful as we did.

I have wanted to move to Florida for as long as I can remember. I would daydream about it at work. My desire is to live in a sunny area with palm trees. I want to feel like I'm on vacation everyday. I retired in 2015 hoping to get everything in order and my home purged within one year. Then my husband, the dog and I could make the move. My husband's mother is his only relative left here in CT and he has become her caretaker. He won't leave her (we did ask her to come with us but she wants to stay with her doctors) so we're stuck here for who knows how long. She is 97 yrs young, she's mentally vibrant and only has a few aches and pains. I fear that I will never get to Florida. The older I get the less I'm inclined to make the move because I'm becoming physically unable to do so.
My husband and I were thinking of taking a trip to Florida this spring just to give me some relief from pining over this but the coronavirus has put an end to that. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming. Everyone stay safe and stay home until this is over.

My inlaws have lived in FL for many years and love it. Having grown up in Indiana they absolutely enjoy the lack of cold weather! My f-i-l regularly ends his emails as "Another day in Paradise." If this is what you're craving - go for it. Just bear in mind how far away your grandchildren will live and how important that may or may not be to you. All the best!

New Hampshire for me and my wife - White Mountains area. Also considering northern Michigan - Grand Traverse Bay area. I can envision us spending some time in western NC during winters, though!

The coronavirus makes the issue of healthcare even bigger than normal. While small towns and rural areas might be better off with the spread of something like this, if an epidemic does hit the medical facilities will be quickly overwhelmed. Having to be transported a long way away for care could be a real problem

Also consider the proximity of nearby grocery stores and necessary shopping!! Where do you go to find things if the closest store, maybe miles and miles away is out of it?

I know the feeling Carole! I live in Iowa and planned on putting my house up for sale and hopefully moving to Florida toward the end of the year after retiring. Not sure how the virus will derail plans. Don’t give up on your dreams!! I may have to wait til things bounce back and hope my 401k recovers but I am still going!!!
