We Have $6 Million Dollars Plus Social Security: So Why Can’t We Enjoy It?

Category: Financial and taxes in retirement

May 31, 2025 — It’s one of those questions that seems so obvious. Of course you ought to be happy – $6 Million dollars! But the answer is, many of us have a hard time with it. Maybe we are afraid you will spend it too fast. The bottom will fall out of your investments, or someone will cheat us out of it. More often, we are so use to being frugal and saving for the future, we can’t let that go and just enjoy spending what we worked so hard to get.

This article has more, particularly on how to overcome those concerns and live life more fully. We are posting it here so Topretirements Members can Comment here about how this works for them.

It would be nice to cover not only married, well-off couples, but those of us that are single and need direction as well because we have tried, been frugal and saved just as the "$6 million dollar man" has done but don't have anywhere as much $$$ in the coffers.

We have money and have the same dilemma. It’s hard to spend when you’re so used to using coupons and budgeting. I grew up without money, so it’s especially hard to spend it. We have been starting to take two vacations a year, one local and one overseas and we’re enjoying that. There are few things we want or need.

A financial advisor once told us that the ideal approach to estate planning is to enjoy yourself all the way to the end. So much so that the check to the undertaker bounces. Takes a lot of courage to try to time that right - but sure is a step in right direction! If you can't figure out how to spend it on yourself, give it to your family and charitable causes.

One of our favorites on this topic comes from a sign out in front of a travel agency: "If you don't travel first class, your grandchildren will certainly enjoy travelling that way."

Like someone else said, I am alone. And, I won't fly and visiting special areas in the US is too hard for me. So what I have done is develop a Will and leave all my monies to pet charities that could use it. Do what makes you happy. I worked hard to make the monies and should be able to disperse it as I want.
