10 Great Walkable Towns in the Southeast
Category: Best Retirement Towns and States
September 1, 2021 — Easy walking to town, parks, and shopping always emerges as a top consideration for choosing a retirement destination when we survey our members. Here are 10 small cities and towns in the southeast where walking is easy and a joy. Since almost every small town is by nature walkable, we have concentrated on larger places of at least 20,000 people.

These are towns where you can live downtown or close to it, and walk to everything that is important to you, day or night. In fact, in most of these towns the walking (and biking) is so good that you could even survive without a car.

My girlfriend and I have been to Greenville S.C many times to see if it could work for us as a retirement area.I am 60(retired) and she is 58,....and working a few more years to pad her 401k. The downtown is spectacular,.....and deserving of the praise it gets.My only concern with these ''best towns'' list is that so many people are made aware of these places,....they then get too expensive,..too crowded,..crime increases,...and what made it special disappears.

Cannot believe there's no mention of New Orleans as a #1 walkable city (Hurricane Ida notwithstanding).

I have been to 7 of these 10 cities and they are walkable but it would be a hot walk in the spring and summer. I do agree with the list and think they are great towns. Savannah was a nice surprise for us, we stayed there a night while driving to Florida and our night turned into four nights, we kept extending our stay because we really enjoyed our time in Savannah and found so much to do, so beautiful interesting, and historical. Someone mentioned when we raved about the town that if you weren't born in the south, we wouldn't be happy living there. Wonder if this is true for many places.
