Tennis or Pickleball – Which Is Better for You?

Category: Health and Wellness Issues

Forget Yankees vs. Red Sox—one of the liveliest rivalries these days is pickleball vs. tennis.

April 21, 2026 – Tennis players bristle when courts are converted for pickleball. Pickleball fans, meanwhile, will gladly point out an empty tennis court as proof their sport is winning. Add in the distinctive “whack” of a pickleball paddle (much to the annoyance of nearby neighbors), and you’ve got a full-blown cultural clash.

Pickleball advocates say their game is more social and accessible. Tennis players sometimes counter that pickleball lacks the same athletic rigor. The debate goes on!

So which is more popular? Pickleball is growing faster—participation jumped 24% from 2024 to 2025, reaching about 24.3 million players. Tennis, however, still has slightly more players overall, with about 27 million.

Both sports offer real health benefits—and a few risks.

A Danish study found that regular tennis players live, on average, about 10 years longer than sedentary individuals. Pickleball may offer similar benefits, thanks to its mix of cardiovascular activity, balance, and social interaction. Some research suggests tennis provides a slightly more intense aerobic workout, while pickleball may better support reflexes and balance.

Of course, injuries can happen in both. Tennis players often deal with elbow and shoulder issues, while pickleball players may experience Achilles, knee, or even eye injuries. As with any sport, staying in shape and warming up properly can make a big difference.

One clear advantage both sports share: social connection. That alone is strongly linked to longer, healthier lives. Pickleball’s casual, drop-in style may give it an edge here, but both games offer plenty of opportunities to stay engaged.

Bottom Line

Whether you prefer tennis or pickleball, the takeaway is simple: staying active matters. Both sports can help you live longer, healthier, and happier than a sedentary lifestyle.

Just be smart about it—prepare your body, warm up, and play within your limits.
