Category: Active adult communities
June 10, 2020 — For over 100 years, Florida’s warm winters, soft sandy beaches, and every imaginable kind of place to live has made it a retirement magnet. Some retirees come here as snowbirds for the winter months only, while others jump all the way in, moving to the Sunshine State to become full time residents. However they arrive, Florida is by far the most popular place in the U.S. for retirement. This article highlights the 14 most popular active adult and 55+ communities in Florida, as measured by visitor interest at Topretirements.com. Another list of communities- I love these, and even though I am not actually looking in Florida right now, I do enjoy reading about communities. But my Surprise Surprise was how people knew about the 3 specialized communities that were in the top 14 : Nalcrest (for postal workers), Indian River Colony Club (for retired military) and ShantiNiketan (for those from India). I wasn't aware there were such communities. I then explored the Topretirements site and remembered Moderator Flo had mentioned using the Search option at the top of the page, and that took me to everything I needed to narrow down the types of communities. On the Search page I could choose Type of Community including Ethnic or Occupational Oriented, and Military. I also noticed there were communities that were LGBT oriented, farming and agricultural, and those with airparks, along with a lot of other choices. I actually spent a lot time on the Search page putting in all sorts of criteria. It was easy and a list of communities were generated for me as soon as I hit the GO button.

Correction to Nalcrest referenced in article:
This is for Letter Carriers ONLY.
Also, I believe you have to be a union member in good standing as well.
Editor's note: Thanks for the clarification Roger. A very interesting community!

As indicated, none of the Southern Atlantic communities in the three-county greater Miami area (Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties) were of interest enough to make the top 15. Abacoa is in far north Palm Beach County, but you’ve counted it in the Treasure Coast. By percentage of residents and raw numbers, Southern Atlantic has by far the largest number of retirees, but apparently isn’t a top spot for readers of Topretirements.com to consider. I wonder why this is? Its retirement community prices and costs overall are usually cheaper than most of the ones in the top 15. As with Jemmie, I do enjoy reading these lists. Even though they’re not perfect indicators, they provide lots of interesting and informative information. Thank you!
