What’s on Your Bucket List?
Category: Bucket Lists
July 16, 2025 — Maybe you’ve seen the movie “The Bucket List”, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. In the movie they each have less than a year to live. The plot unfolds from there, as this odd duo goes on a road trip trying to accomplish as much as possible in the days remaining before they “kick the bucket”. Its premise is so applicable to those of us who are starting out in retirement. Although we are luckier than Nicholson and Morgan in that we (hope!) we have more than 1 year to accomplish our list, that also carries the danger that we have so much time left that we feel like we don’t have to get started any time soon.

Staying healthy for as long as I can so that I can see as much of the U.S., and the world, as possible. I have been to all of the states except four and will visit my fourth continent this November when I go to my childhood dream of seeing the pyramids in Egypt. In May, I explored Peru and the mysterious Machu Picchu site. I would also like to visit every country in North and South America.

We are always on the lookout for contenders for the worst "best places" list. Actually found a fun one this week - worst cities to visit. When the list starts out with Damascus, Syria, you know they are on the right track. Who would even consider some of these places? https://www.gamintraveler.com/2025/07/14/worst-cities-to-travel-in-the-world/ The article does have some good tips on how to avoid crowds and find undiscovere places.

One of my friends in his late 70's told me something that resonates with this article. She said that it seems like half of the couples she knows now has at least one person who has a serious health issue. The point is, if you have a bucket list or goals to accomplish - get started now. You can be healthy one day, and the next morning never be able to travel again. Grab it!

When I realized the only item on my bucket list was to start spending every Christmas on a beach with family, it jump-started some soul-searching. Why no bucket list? Just coasting into eternity? We had plenty of plans when first retired, but settled into a comfortable rut. Time to get back out there and DO something new. Thanks, TR!

Here's another great thing to do, either on a trip, or in your hometown. Take a cooking class! We experienced one on a recent trip to Sienna. Not only was it fun, meeting some interesting fellow students, but the result was one of the most memorable meals we ever experienced. Here is Lucy Burdette's experience on Mystery Lovers Kitchen about Scuola di Cucina di Lella
PS - Food tours, walking tours, etc. - worth the money when you are traveling. You just miss so much without a guide.
